Does Exercise type Matter?
Equal Calories Burned Does NOT equal Same Results.
Many People fixate on the number of exercise calories they burn. New research, sponsored by Les Mills International, shows that even when two group fitness activities ( indoor cycling and a resistance workout) were matched for duration and caloric expenditure, they did not have equivalent metabolic effects- which could influence long term training results. Lead author Nigel Harris, PhD said “ The types of exercise used to burn those calories… impacts the long-term positive effects that exercise has on the body.” 12 healthy active particpants completed the two workouts on separate days and then had researchers measure the women’s physiological and hormonal responses using blood samples. The blood samplers were taken 3 times, once prior, a second immediately after, and lastly roughly 45min after the workout. Research showed that at the 45minute mark, HGH and blood lactate was significantly higher than they were after cycling. Study authors noted that HGH stimulates protein synthesis and bone mineralization, among various other things.
